Heritage
Cwmcerrig Farm in Gorslas, Carmarthenshire was bought by our parents in 1952. It needed some work but they soon were growing vegetables and selling fruit and veg in local markets and door to door. Latterly beef and sheep have been the main enterprises together with poultry for the Christmas market. In the first ten years sales have grown to 2000 turkeys, 2000 chickens, 200 ducks and 100 geese and eggs from 300 free range hens. Since 2001 we have done our processing on site.
During 2008 we started a major and significant project to develop an 8,000 sq ft, £900,000 Farm Shop and Grill at Cwmcerrig as an alternative marketing solution in order to ensure a future for the next generation of the Watkins family. There are 20 family members working in the business and a further 20 local staff members have been taken on to work in the Farm Shop and Grill.
Planning was granted in August and on the 24/9/08 the family started to build the shop. With the help of a local bricky we built the shop ourselves, sourcing materials locally wherever possible. It took five months of seven day weeks, working all daylight hours to get the Farm Shop and Grill ready to open its doors in February 2009. The building has a state of the art cutting room, kitchen, bakery, produce section, a traditional butchery and a hundred seat restaurant. We have been delighted with the response and the support from customers in Carmathenshire and its surrounding counties. Within five weeks of opening our 50 space car park proved inadequate and we had to provide an overflow car park to ease the congestion! This was especially pleasing given the work we had put in and the current economic circumstances.
